Detan Honding, a wanted con man of noble birth and ignoble tongue, has found himself in the oasis city of Aransa. He and his trusted companion, Tibs, may have pulled off one too many cons against the city's elite and need to make a quick escape. They set their sights on their biggest heist yet - the gorgeous airship of the exiled commodore Thratia. But in the middle of his scheme, a face changer known as a doppel starts murdering key members of Aransa's government. The sudden paranoia makes Detan's plans of stealing Thratia's ship that much harder. And with this sudden power vacuum, Thratia can solidify her power and wreak havoc against the Empire. But the doppel isn't working for Thratia and has her own intentions. Did Detan accidentally walk into a revolution and a crusade? He has to be careful - there's a reason most people think he's dead. And if his dangerous secret gets revealed, he has a lot more to worry about than a stolen airship.

Steal the Sky The Scorched Continent Book 1 (Audible Audio Edition) Megan E O'Keefe Jim Frangione Recorded Books Books

Too many books are formulaic, in my opinion. Some are still good, some are not, all depending on the skill of the writer. What I liked about Steal the Sky was that not only was it well-written, but it was fresh and new. The story immediately caught my attention with an interesting and engaging cast of characters, and the world-building was intricate and enjoyable. I might have had a faint quibble on meteorology, but overall, her universe rang true. More than ringing true, which is just one vital aspect, it was interesting. The most complete world-building is worthless of that world is boring. O'Keefe's Aransa is certainly not boring!

The bottom line is that the book was a good, fun read and not a re-hash of the same-old, same-old. I enthusiastically recommend this book.

Steal the Sky The Scorched Continent Book 1 (Audible Audio Edition) Megan E O'Keefe Jim Frangione Recorded Books Books Reviews

Clever, but slow in developing, and not a ton of action if that suits your fancy. The characters aren't bad, but the world-building is stellar.
Anyone who reads Cheri Priest or Brandon Sanderson will adore this story. It's fast paced, witty, and the adventure pulls you forward. The characters are memorable and charming. O'Keefe immediately engages you and keeps you reading. This does not feel like a debut read, but like the fifth novel of a seasoned professional.
10\10, I'm obsessed and you can't go wrong!
I really enjoyed this debut novel, and found the setting the most novel thing about it, a mixture of western and steampunk that reminded me quite a bit of Firefly. The character's we're rooting for are criminals, but not as bad as the other criminals (and some of the authorities!). The story jumps right into action, and keeps rolling until the end. Definitely give this one a try!
I debated with myself over quitting this story many times. I couldn't stand the seemingly shallow and one-dimensional characters. I do so enjoy a character-driven tale! Then, and I think by this point I had read about 35-40%- it abruptly improved and grabbed my attention. It's not a perfect book, but I still liked it. I'm glad that I didn't give up, and I'm actually on to the sequel.
I've read a short story of Megan's before and loved it but the depth of this book, the characters real and without the usual heroics and pretentious beauty, the easy way the structure of the world and city are revealed all combine to speak of an experienced author, a writer with years of work under her belt. Megan may be a new author but you'd never know it based on this performance. Well done and I will wait impatiently for the next book.
This is the sort of steampunk I love.

Steal the Sky puts a wonderful, fresh spin on steampunk, and is full of delightful and interesting characters, to boot. I love Detan's attitude and Ripka's resolve—and I adore Tibs more than words can possibly describe. The technology is fun, the story is exciting, the dialogue is witty, and the whole thing comes together so well that I dove straight into the next book in the series as soon as I finished this one.

Highly recommended!
A delightfully different fantasy, we follow Detan Honding, a noble born scoundrel who tries to stay one step ahead of the law, but ends up becoming embroiled in a scheme to steal the fabulous airship of the power grabbing ex-commodore Thratia. The scheme also involves an illusionist or doppel, who can change her face using the lighter than air substance called selium, which is also used to float the airships. The doppel is out for revenge for the death of her son, and her activities have all sorts of repercussions for the selium mining city of Aransa. I loved the irrepressible Detan, who is always ready with a quip, even when it might be better for him to keep his mouth shut. His sidekick, Tibs is deeper than he first appears, and is loyal to a fault to his friend Detan. Then there’s the noble keeper of the law, Ripka, who keeps being impersonated by the doppel, which causes all sorts of confusion. I thought Detan’s schemes were never going to work, and at times his situation was very perilous, but the way everything ends up was entertaining and very satisfying. I certainly hope this author has more stories up her sleeve for these characters, or at least more tales set in this fantastic world.
